Jenny Hinxman, Optometrist

My name is Jenny Hinxman. I graduated from Bradford University in 1991 and went on to do my prequalifying training at
Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. I was lucky enough to be
offered a full time post there on qualifying and stayed there for
the next three years.

Itchy feet got the better of me and I headed off on my travels
around the World in 1995. Rather unintentionally, when I arrived
in Australia I landed a job at a small optometry practice in
Melbourne and stayed there for the next four years. Arriving
back in the UK in 2000, I have worked as a locum optometrist
ever since, initially mainly for the larger companies but am now
fortunate to work solely for small independent optometrists.

During this time I also worked for 10 years, parttime, at Chesterfield Royal Hospital where I
particularly enjoyed my roles working within the paediatric clinic and the satisfaction of helping patients with low vision. My interest in low vision lead me to do a course in Rehabilitation Work
(Visual Impairment), however life events, the arrival of my daughter, meant I was unable to
finish the course, but it has given me a greater understanding of the needs of those with a
visual impairment.
